Forest of Mercia CIC worked with The Friends of Essington to contact Bovis Homes, who were doing a large housing development in the village of Essington. Bovis Homes were keen to be involved in Trees for Climate and put forward an area for tree planting on the edge of the new development.

Forest of Mercia CIC worked with The Friends of Essington to contact Bovis Homes, who were doing a large housing development in the village of Essington. Bovis Homes were keen to be involved in Trees for Climate and put forward an area for tree planting on the edge of the new development.
Once agreed, we planted 120 smaller broadleaved native trees on the site. The species mix included Cherry, Crab Apple, and Rowan. These were chosen as they were smaller growing trees so would have less impact on the new housing for shade and leaf fall.
The planting site on the edge of the development will help to shelter the housing from the adjacent M6 motorway. It will also help to reduce pollution and noise from the motorway, as well as fixing carbon for climate change, and increasing the biodiversity on the site.
The planting site is next to a public footpath and an existing hawthorn hedge and will extend and develop a green corridor through the area for wildlife. This improvement in the landscape and outlook of the area will also help resident’s well-being and mindfulness long term. The trees were protected with jute mulch mats and rabbit guards so that spraying will not be required.
The trees planted will fix 49 tCO2e at 50 years, rising to 60 tCO2e at 100 years (based on the Woodland Carbon Code calculator)
